⚡ Must-Know: New Eskom Rules for Homeowners with Solar Panels

Thinking of going solar? Already have panels on your roof?
You may be sitting on a compliance time bomb.

Eskom has issued a new directive:
All grid-connected solar PV systems must be registered and compliant by March 2026, or face penalties, disconnection, or forced remediation.

This applies to:

  • Freestanding homes

  • Sectional-title units

  • Any system connected to the national grid (Eskom or Municipal)

📌 What You Must Do (Now)

  1. Confirm your power provider: Eskom vs Municipality

  2. Engage a certified installer: Registered IE or MIE only

  3. Get a valid Certificate of Compliance (CoC)

  4. Have an engineer sign off if needed

  5. Register with Eskom or your municipality

  6. Install a smart meter (free until March 2026)

  7. Switch to Homeflex tariff (Time-of-Use)

⚠️ What Happens if You Don’t?

Eskom is using satellite tech to find non-compliant rooftops.
You risk:

  • Steep fines

  • Meter disconnection

  • Legal exposure in complexes (trustees take note!)

Some homeowners report being forced to spend up to R50,000 to fix systems that weren’t done right the first time.
